C10. Conceptual Understanding/Experience/Dictionary/Inductive

Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of presidential candidate experience. Students are asked to select a case then select a dictionary entry that is a good description of the case, and then explain why the entry and the case are a good match.

To Teachers:

  • Read the Roget Thesaurus entry - "Experience". (Whole class activity)
  • Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
  • Assign each group an election year.
  • Give each group a worksheet.

Materials:
Worksheet Word document | PDF

Worksheet Instructions:

  • Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
  • Search on "Experience" in EASE History. [Campaign Ads Menu>Pres. Leadership Attributes>Positive>Experience]
  • Examine at least 12 cases that have been coded on "Experience".
  • Column 1: Select six cases that focus on candidate "Experience".
  • Column 2: Select a dictionary entry (or entries) that is a good match with each case. It'’s ok to use the same synonym to describe more than one case.
  • Column 3: Briefly explain, in 2 to 3 sentences, why the entry and the case are a good match.
