CV1. Conceptual Understanding/ Freedom/Thesaurus/Deductive

Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of freedom. Students are asked to select a case, choose a thesaurus entry that is a good description of the case, and then explain why the entry is a good match with the case.

To Teachers:

  • Read the Roget Thesaurus entry of "Freedom". (Whole class activity)
  • Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
  • Give each group a worksheet.

Materials:

Worksheet Instructions:

  • Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
  • Search on "All Protest Movements" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Historical Events>Protest Movements>All Protest Movements]
  • Examine cases that have been coded on "Protest Movements".
  • Column 1: Select three cases that will be a good match for each synonym.
  • Column 2: A synonym for "Freedom" has been provided.
  • Column 3: Briefly explain in 2 to 3 sentences why the cases a good match for the synonym.
