CV2. Conceptual Understanding/Freedom/Dictionary/Inductive

Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of freedom. Students are provided dictionary entries, asked to select 3 cases that illustrate each entry, and then explain how the cases are sort of similar and sort of different.

To Teachers:

  • Read the World Heritage definition of "Freedom". (Whole class activity)
  • Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
  • Give each group a worksheet.

Worksheet Instructions:

  • Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
  • Search on "Civil Rights Movement" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Historical Events>Protest Movements>Civil Rights Movement]
  • Column 1: Examine the cases that appear in Column 1 of the chart.
  • Column 2: Select a dictionary entry that is a good match with the case. Your group is encouraged to look for multiple dictionary entries that are good matches. Write the number of the entry (or numbers of the entries) in Column 2.
  • Column 3: Briefly explain in 1 to 2 sentences why the entry and the case are a good match.
