CV3. Conceptual Understanding/Freedom/Thesaurus/Symbols of Freedom

Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of five symbols of freedom. Students are provided cases and thesaurus entries. They are asked to explain how the synonyms could be used to describe the symbol.

To Teachers:

  • Read the Roget Thesaurus entry of "Freedom". (Whole class activity)
  • Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
  • Give each group a worksheet.

Materials:

Worksheet Instructions:

  • Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
  • Search on "Freedom" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Core Values>US Values>Freedom>Symbols of Freedom]
  • Examine at least 12 cases that have been coded on "Symbols of Freedom".
  • Column 1: The symbols of freedom have been provided.
  • Column 2: Synonyms for "Freedom" has been provided.
  • Column 3: Briefly explain in 2 to 3 sentences why the symbol and the Thesaurus entries are a good match.
