H10. Conceptual Meanings /War/Dictionary/ Inductive
Description: This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of war. Students are provided dictionary entries, asked to select 3 cases that illustrate each entry, and then explain how the cases are sort of similar and sort of different.
To Teachers:
- Read the WordNet definition of "War". (Whole class activity)
- Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
- Assign each group a decade.
- Give each group a worksheet to complete.

Worksheet Instructions:
- Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
- Search on "War" and your assigned decade in EASE History’s Advanced Theme Search. [Search: EASE History Home Page>Theme Search]
- Examine cases that have been coded on "War" and the assigned decade..
- Column 1: Select three cases that are a good match with the dictionary entry that is provided in Column 2. Write the names of the three matching cases in Column 1.
- Column 3: The first two columns reveal how the cases are sort of similar to each other. In Column 3 briefly explain in 2 to 3 sentences how the three matching cases in Column 1 are sort of similar and sort of different from each other.
After completing the task, groups will share their findings with the whole class.
