H11. Conceptual Understanding/War/Thesaurus/Deductive
Description: This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of war. Students are asked to select a case, choose a thesaurus entry that is a good description of the case, and then explain why the entry is a good match with the case.
To Teachers:
- Read the WordNet definition of "War". (Whole class activity)
- Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
- Assign each group a decade.
- Give each group a worksheet to complete.

Worksheet Instructions:
- Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
- Search on "War" in the Keyword Search. [Search: EASE History Home Page>Keyword Search]
- Search on "War" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Historical Events>War>All War]
- Column 1: Cases have been provided.
- Column 2: Select at least two synonyms of "war" that are a good match with the case. (See the Roget’s Thesaurus entry that is provided)
- Column 3: Explain why these synonyms are a good match with the case.
After completing the task, groups will share their findings with the whole class.
