H12. Conceptual Meanings/War/Thesaurus/Inductive
Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of war. Students are provided a synonym, asked to select 3 cases that illustrate each synonym, and then asked to explain how the cases are sort of different from each other.
To Teachers:
- Read the Roget Thesaurus entry of "War". (Whole class activity)
- Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
- Give each group a worksheet. Each group will be given four synonyms to work with. There are four different worksheets. More than one group can work on the same set of four.

Worksheet Instructions:
- Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
- Search on "War" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Historical Events>War>All War]
- Column 1: Select three cases that will be a good match for each synonym.
- Column 2: A synonym for war has been provided.
- Column 3: The first two columns reveal how the cases are sort of similar to each other. In Column 3 briefly explain in 2 to 3 sentences how the three matching cases in Column 1 are sort of different from each other.
After completing the task, groups will share their findings with the whole class.
