Description:

Civil Rights:

  1. What events define the Civil Rights Movement in the United States?
  2. What are civil rights?
  3. Who are some of the main people involved in the struggle for civil rights for blacks in the United States?
  4. Why do you think issues such as the fight for economic equality often become obscured when discussing the history of civil rights in the United States?
  5. How do you envision civil rights forty years from now? Use past historical events to justify your predictions

Cold War:

  1. How did relations between the two superpowers change after the Cuban Missile Crisis? Describe the situation before and afterwards.
  2. How successful were the attempts at Détente in the years 1962 to 1975?
  3. Describe some of the tensions between the US and USSR during the Cold War?
  4. Describe how the US and the USSR competed with each other during the Cold War?
  5. Analyze the successes and failures of US foreign policy during the Cold War?
  6. How and for what reasons did US foreign policy change after WWII?
  7. Describe the Cold War fears of the American people in the aftermath of WWII?

Conflicts:

  1. What are some conflicts that have persisted over time?
  2. Compare and contrast two wars. How were they similar? How were they different?
  3. Why did the US enter WWI? Why did the US enter WWII?
  4. What were the effects of the WWII on US society? What were the effects of the Vietnam War on US society?
  5. Working with a specific clip: 'Hungary'. How much can you learn from this source about the Hungarian uprising?

Culture:

  1. To what extent and in what ways did the roles of women change in the 20th Century?
  2. Who were the baby boomers? Describe four key events that might have influenced the baby boomers? How did these events impact the baby boom generation?

Decades:

  1. Who had the most important things to say in the 1960s? Why? Choose four clips and present your argument.
  2. Compare and contrast US society in the 1930s and 1950s.
  3. Compare and contrast two important events in the 1930s.
  4. Compare and contrast two cultural events in the 1930s with two cultural events in the 1960's.
  5. Describe the Fifties.

Education:

  1. How has schooling changed over the decades?
  2. How have schools been used to promote social change? (Brown, Little Rock, Title IX)
  3. Is it important for schools to be desegregated and diverse?
  4. What significant events, legislation and organizations led up to the Brown v. Board of Education decision, and how did they impact race relations in the 1940's and 1950's?
  5. What significant events, legislation and organizations followed the Brown v. Board of Education decision, and how did they impact race relations in the 1950's and 1960's?

Fashion:

  1. Describe your style of dress. How does it compare to most kids your age at your school? How does it compare to other kids in your city or town, and in your country?
  2. How does it compare to how youth dressed in the early 1900s?

New Deal:

  1. How did Roosevelt try to tackle the Depression?
  2. How successful was Roosevelt in tackling the effects of the Depression?
  3. How did the New Deal programs change the role of government?
  4. Compare and contrast the New Deal and the Great Society.

Politics:

  1. Compare and contrast: administrations, candidates, elections, presidential inaugurations, use of media by politicians.
  2. What significant events led up to the 1968 presidential election?
  3. Describe and account for the changes in the American presidency between 1960 and 1975. (JFK New Frontier, Great Society, Watergate) Describe how the powers of presidency and the role of media changed over time.

Protest Movements:

  1. Compare protest movements that took place in the twentieth century. How were they similar? How were they different?
  2. Compare and contrast the Civil Rights movement and the Women's movement.

Society:

  1. Describe life in New York City across three decades.

Transportation:

  1. In what ways did developments in transportation bring about economic and social change in 20th Century America?

Technology:

  1. Find support for this statement. A lot of things have happened in this century and most of them plug into walls-Father John Culkin.
  2. If you had an important idea in the 1930s and wanted everyone to know about it, how would you get it out to the rest of the world? How about the 1960's? How about today?
  3. Compare and contrast two technologies and their impact on society, politics, and culture.

WWII:

  1. Different people were affected in different ways in WWII. Compare and contrast two groups that were negatively and/or positively affected.
  2. Compare and contrast Yalta and Potsdam photos. What had changed between Yalta and Potsdam?
  3. In what ways did WWII alter US society?
  4. What was the impact of WWII on African Americans and women?
