H9. Conceptual Meanings /War/Dictionary/Deductive
Description:
This lesson will help students develop a deeper understanding of war. Students are asked to select a case, choose a dictionary entry that is a good description of the case, and then explain why the entry is a good match with the case.
To Teachers:
- Read the WordNet definition of "War". (Whole class activity)
- Create groups of 3 to 4 students.
- Assign each group a decade.
- Give each group a worksheet to complete.

Worksheet Instructions:
- Go to EASE History -- http://www.easehistory.org/
- Search on "War" in EASE History. [Search: EASE History Historical Events>War>All War]
- Examine EASE History cases that have been coded on "War".
- Column 1- Select a case and write the name of the case in the first column. For example, the 1940's group will select cases from WWII and the Cold War. They will write each case name in the first column.
- Column 2- Select a dictionary entry (or multiple entries) that is a good match with the case. Write the number of the entry (or numbers of the entries) in Column 2.
- Column 3- Briefly explain in 1 to 2 sentences why the entry and the case are a good match.
After completing the task, groups will share their findings with the whole class.
